Week commencing 12th June 2017

 

Buddhism Day!

On Wednesday 14th June we had a whole school Buddhism day where the children had the opportunity to learn all about the traditions, beliefs and spiritual practices of the Buddhist religion.  Darwin class started their day with a meditation session where the children listened to some traditional Buddhist music and practiced chanting a meditation mantra.  We were then super relaxed for the day ahead and tasted some food from a Buddhist's vegan diet including some traditional bean, lentil and chickpea dishes.

Week commencing 5th June 2017

 

This week the children have started their new maths topic and have been exploring positional language.  They enjoyed listening to the 'in', 'on' and 'under' song and used different objects to follow positional instructions such as, '...sit on the chair', or '...put the doll under the chair'.

Week commencing 15th May 2017

 

This week Darwin class have been continuing their work on comparative language and are becoming more familiar with the terms 'long and short'.  The children have been comparing all sorts of everyday classroom objects recognising the 'longest' and the 'shortest' using symbol support.

Week commencing 8th May 2017

 

This week the children have been retelling the story 'Today is Monday...' by Eric Carle.  To help the children remember what the animals ate for dinner on each day of the week we have been tasting some of the foods from the story.  Using pictures and symbols the children answered questions about the story and identified what the animals ate, e.g. 'What did the Fox eat on Saturday?'.  The children had lots of fun smelling and tasting all the different foods and chose their favourite at the end of the lesson.

Week commencing 2nd May 2017

 

This week the children have continued working on this terms English book 'Today is Monday...' by Eric Carle.  They are now more familiar with the story and are learning their days of the week sequencing and matching these to pictures from the story to describe what the animals eat on each day of the week.

Week commencing 24th April 2017

 

This week in our Maths work Darwin have been developing their understanding of comparison language using the terms 'big' and 'small' to recognise and compare a range of different objects.  The children used symbol support to group everyday objects describing and comparing their size e.g. finding the 'big' spoon and the 'small' spoon.

Week Commencing 18th April 2017

 

The children have had a busy week back after their Easter holidays and have enjoyed listening to their new story for this term, 'Today is Monday' by Eric Carle.  We have listened to the story on the interactive whiteboard and the children are beginning to join in the rhyme remembering what the animals eat on each day of the week.

Week commencing 20th March 2017

 

Red Nose Day!!!

The children have had a very busy day raising money for Comic Relief, we have all worn our Red Nose Day outfits and had lots of fun!  This morning the children in Primary and Darwin class had a special assembly choosing songs to sing and dance to.   This afternoon some of the children took part in a comedy fashion show or a teddy bears picnic bringing their own teddy bears in from home to join in.  We have all had a great day and hope to have raised lots of money for Comic Relief.

Week commencing 13th March 2017

 

In our English work this term the children have been continuing their work on the story 'Night Monkey, Day Monkey' by Julia Donaldson.  The children have been finding out what each monkey does during the day and night using symbols to recognise characters and retell parts of the story.  Some of the children are becoming more familiar with question words 'who', 'what' and 'where' and have been answering questions about what happens in the story.

Week commencing 6th March 2017

 

This week the children have been continuing to work on repeating patterns in their Maths work.  They have been consolidating their knowledge of colour and shape patterns continuing three and four stage repeating patterns.  They are now beginning to create their own patterns using a variety of objects.

Week commencing 27th February 2017

 

This week the children have been working on repeating patterns in their maths lessons.  We have been looking at different patterns and used templates to copy two and three stage repeating patterns.  Some of the children have been learning to continue a pattern using coloured cubes.  We have also created patterns on the interactive whiteboard choosing the correct coloured shape to copy and continue each pattern.

Week commencing 20th February 2017

 

The children have all settled back well this week after half term and have enjoyed listening to their new story this term 'Night Monkey, Day Monkey'.  We are learning all about light and dark and what the different monkeys do in the day time and night time.

This week the children have continued to work on their number recognition and counting skills.  They have joined in number songs counting up to 10 and recognising what number comes next in the sequence.

Week Commencing 23rd January 2017

 

This week in our Maths work the children have been working on their number recognition.  Some of the children have been counting and sequencing numbers up to 30.  Using number cards Alice, Owen and Oliver recognised each number and sequenced them independently up to 30.

Week Commencing 16th January 2017

 

This week the children have continued their work on the story 'The Train Ride'.  They have enjoyed listening to the story on the interactive whiteboard and are beginning to join in repeating words and phrases from the story.  We have also looked at the pictures in the story recognising and naming images and matching these to symbols.

Welcome back and Happy New Year!

 

The children have settled back into school well after their busy Christmas holidays.  We have started our new topic this term all about journeys and transport.  Our story this term is 'The Train Ride' by June Crebbin, the children have enjoyed listening to the story this week finding out all about what happens on the train ride.

Week Commencing 5th December 2016

This week the children have enjoyed taking part in a Write Dance session during their English lessons. Write Dance uses music and movement to provide opportunities for children to develop the physical skills needed for mark making and handwriting skills such as balance and coordination.  The children enjoyed listening to different pieces of music to encourage them to create physical movements and shapes on paper.  This week the children were practicing circular movements using chalk and pencils.

Week Commencing 28th November 2016

This week in English we have been reading our book 'Brown Bear, Brown Bear What Can You See?' and the children have been learning all about the different characters.  We have remembered which animals are in the story and used symbols to help us describe the colour of each animal.  Some of the children labelled pictures of each character.

Week Commencing 21st November 2016

After spending the last few weeks learning all about 2D shapes this week in our Maths lessons we have started to investigate 3D shapes.  The children have been exploring the following 3D shapes; cube, cone, sphere, cuboid, triangle and cylinder learning to recognise, match and name each shape.  We have also started to identify properties of 3D shapes as the children could recognise which 2D shape face some of the 3D shapes had for example Alice could tell me that the cube had a square face.

Week Commencing 14th November 2016

This term Darwin class have been reading another Eric Carle book, 'Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?'  The children are learning all about colours and enjoying recognising all the different coloured animals in the story.

The children have been listening to the story and using the picture cards to remember the colours of each animal.

Week Commencing 7th November 2016

 

This week the children have continued to build on their knowledge of 2D shapes.  They have been exploring the classroom to find 2D shapes in everyday objects.  The children matched each object to the shape symbol e.g. the book is a square, the plate is circular and the mirror is triangular.

This week the children have started their new Maths topic on 2D shapes.  The children have familiarised themselves with the shapes recognising and matching the shapes and learning their names.  Some of the children have been identifying properties of these shapes including how may sides and faces.

Hindu Day

On Wednesday we had a special whole school day celebrating Hinduism.  The children had an exciting day learning all about the traditions and customs of the religion.  Darwin class experienced a music session where they listened to Hindu music and played different instruments. 

 

We also tried different Indian foods and those often eaten in a Hindu diet.  The children all enjoyed tasting the foods such as mango chutney, poppodoms and naan bread.

Week Commencing 10th October 2016

 

Darwin class enjoyed a trip to Trinity Church Coffee Morning this week. The children have been experiencing different community activities, learning how to behave in a range of social situations.  This week the children all chose what they would like to drink using words, signs or symbols.

In our Art and Design lessons this week the children have been using different materials to draw shapes, lines and letters to create different patterns including sand paper, paint and string.

Week Commencing 3rd October 2016

 

We have continued to work on our topics 'Ourselves' and 'Our Body' this week and the children have been learning to recognise and name their body parts using symbols.  They have also drawn round their bodies using the symbols to label each part from Head to Toe.

Week Commencing 26th September 2016

 

The children have been continuing to build their knowledge of number this week in Maths.  We have been counting objects using 1-1 correspondence and matching these to the correct numeral.  The children have used interactive games on www.topmarks .co.uk to practice these skills counting the buttons on the gingerbread man and finding the numeral between 1 - 10.

Week Commencing 19th September 2016

 

This week the children have been working hard in Maths building on their knowledge and understanding of number.  Some of the children have been learning to recognise and match numbers up to 5 using a giant number line and tracing boards as well as joining in familiar number songs such as 'Five Little Speckled Frogs' and 'Five Currant Buns'.

The rest of Darwin class have been learning their numbers to 30 sequencing number cards, making number lines with tiles and counting on from a given number.

Week Commencing 12th September 2016

 

This week the children have continued to familiarise themselves with our story "From Head to Toe" by Eric Carle.  We have listened to the story learning all about the different characters and the parts of their body they can move.  The children enjoyed acting out each animal and copying the actions they make. 

 

 

We then thought about our own body parts and made different movements using our bodies e.g.

"I am Ollie I can kick my legs", "I am Sophie I can wave my arms", "I am Alice I can tap my knees".

Week Commencing 5th September 2016

 

Welcome back to school Darwin class! This week the children have been settling back into their daily routines and activities, it's lovely to see the children enjoying being back at school after their busy summer holidays.

 

The children have had lots of fun this week listening to this terms English text 'From Head to Toe' by Eric Carle.  We have read the story getting ourselves familiar with all the characters.  We have been singing and acting out what the animals can do with their bodies, which links to this terms science topic - Ourselves and Our Body.

 

Week Commencing 11th July 2016

Our second week of transition and Darwin class are really enjoying their new friends.  This week the children have been spending more time getting to know each other with a trip to Morven Park where they enjoyed taking turns on the play equipment and practicing their balance and co-ordination skills.

The children also enjoyed a fun sensory afternoon where they were able to use all their senses - smell, taste, touch and sound to explore different objects and materials including hot water, cold water, rice and lentils. 

Week Commencing 4th July

This week we have been welcoming our new friends to Darwin class, Neo and Leo, and our new teaching assistants Mrs Green-Wright, Mrs Riley and Miss Gibbons.  We have had a lovely first week getting to know each other, learning our new 'Hello' song, playing taking-turn games and becoming familiar with our classroom routines. 

 

Our topic this term is all about the Olympics and we have been painting flags in our art and design lessons to learn about the different countries that will be taking part.  The children enjoyed using rollers to create these super flags of Thailand! 

Week Commencing 20th June 2016 - Sports Week!

This week Darwin class have been super busy taking part in lots of sporting activities as part of Bracken Hill's sports week.  The children have all coped really well with lots of changes to their timetable and have thoroughly enjoyed trying lots of new and unfamiliar activities.  One of our favourites this week has been the outdoor cooking session with the adventure service where the children experienced using a fire pit to cook chocolate bananas!  Darwin class also had lots of fun when Welbeck class came to visit for some team games and competitions.  The children worked really well together taking part in different activities, including relay races.  Well done to all the children and everyone who helped to make sports week such a success!

Week Commencing 13th June 2016

This week Darwin's KS3 and KS4 pupils have been working on their independent life skills.  The children have been learning about what makes a healthy lunch and this week they have chosen what they would like in their packed lunch including choosing and making their own sandwiches.  The children decided what bread they would use and what they would fill their sandwich with, choosing from egg, tuna, ham and cheese.  Some of the skills the children have practiced include opening a tin, taking the shell of an egg, buttering bread and using a knife to cut and slice.  We talked about how we could keep our lunch fresh and used cling film to wrap our sandwiches ready for lunchtime! 

Week commencing 6th June 2016

In our Maths work this week the children have been building on their knowledge of number.  Some of the children have been practicing counting up to 10 starting from a given number, and counting objects to represent a specific number.  The other children have been developing their knowledge of the sequence of numbers 10 - 20, they have learnt how to use a number line for counting on and fill in the missing numbers on the interactive whiteboard.

 

Our Key Stage 4 children have been doing more work on their ASDAN modules this week.  The children have been developing their understanding of how to be safe in the community and learning about what they would need to do if they were lost or separated from an adult.  The children joined in role play activities when they visited Sutton on Tuesday afternoon. They practiced using a telephone to dial schools number.  They also found the information centre and asked a member of staff for help.

Week Commencing 23rd May 2016

This week our Key Stage 4 & 5 pupils visited Crich Tramway Museum.  As part of their ASDAN module 'Towards Independence' the children have been learning about different modes of Transport including vehicles from the past.  The children spent the day at the Museum and enjoyed finding out about transport from a different era.  They particularly enjoyed riding on the old trams and experiencing different ways to travel.  A big thank you to all the staff at the Museum for their help and support. 

 

Week Commencing 16th May 2016

This week in our Maths work the children have been counting on from a given number and learning about the term 'more'.  Some of the children have been counting on up to 30 and finding out what '1' or '2' more is.  The children have all worked really hard in their Maths lessons this week and particularly enjoyed the Interactive Whiteboard game 'Whack a Mole' where they had to guess which number game next counting on '1' or '2' more.

Week Commencing 9th May 2016

Darwin class are enjoying their weekly 'Write Dance' activities during their English lessons.  'Write Dance' uses music and movement to develop children's physical skills needed for mark-making and handwriting.  This week the children used chalk, pencils and foam paint to create lines and shapes.

Week Commencing 2nd May

This week in Darwin class the children have enjoyed a visit to Coffee Morning at Trinity Church.  The children were very sensible walking down to the church, learning how to cross the road safely.  All the children behaved extremely well during the visit and practiced making a choice - deciding what they would like to eat and drink. 

Darwin class have continued exploring different tools in their art and design lesson.  This week the children have been using brushes to create patterns and shapes.
